A Greener Future: Bayton's 2024 Carbon Footprint

At Bayton, we're committed to building a better tomorrow. We believe that sustainable business practices are not just a trend, but a necessity. That's why we've taken significant steps to reduce our environmental impact.

During 2024, we continue to focus on our goal to reach NET ZERO by 2028. Discover how Bayton continues to lead the way in sustainable business practices and making a positive impact on the planet.

Our Carbon Accounting Journey:

  • Early Steps: We began our carbon accounting journey in 2021 by participating in the Carbon Trace Joint Project, a collaborative initiative between CBRE and EmitWise. This project introduced us to the spend-based approach to calculating carbon emissions, allowing us to estimate our footprint based on procurement spending.

  • Adopting NetSuite: In late 2023, we transitioned our ERP system to NetSuite, which incorporates a powerful carbon accounting tool called CarbonSuite. This advanced system enables us to accurately track and analyse our carbon emissions.

  • The Bayton Commercial Cleaning Company also achieved a gold medal rating from Ecovadis in 2023, placing us in the top 94th percentile of all rated companies, recognising our five-year commitment to sustainability and ethical practices.

  • FY 2024 and Beyond: From the start of FY 2024, we leveraged CarbonSuite to calculate our carbon emissions. This marked a significant step forward in our sustainability efforts, providing us with granular data to inform our decision-making.

Methodology and Scope:

Our carbon emissions reporting period aligns with our financial year (FY), spanning from July to June. FY 2024 serves as our baseline year for carbon emissions reporting.

We primarily employ a spend-based approach, utilising the Exiobase Emission Factor Database to estimate emissions. However, certain categories, such as fugitive emissions and employee commuting, require an activity-based calculation method. In FY 2025, we plan to expand the use of activity-based methods to categories like purchased energy, business travel, and fuel and energy-related activities.

Key Findings from FY 2024

  • Total Emissions: Our total emissions for FY 2024 amounted to 1224.4 tCO2e.

  • Emissions by Category: A detailed breakdown of emissions across various categories provides valuable insights into our carbon hotspots.

  • Emissions by Subsidiary and Location: Analysing emissions at the subsidiary and location levels helps identify areas with significant impact and potential for reduction.

  • Emissions by Source Type and Vendor: Understanding the sources and vendors contributing to our carbon footprint enables targeted interventions.

Looking Forward - Transitioning to Net Zero by 2028

We are actively working towards a comprehensive transition plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2028. This plan will involve a combination of strategies, including:

  • Energy Efficiency: Implementing energy-saving measures across our operations.

  • Renewable Energy: Increasing the utilisation of renewable energy sources.

  • Sustainable Procurement: Prioritising suppliers with strong sustainability practices.

  • Carbon Offset Initiatives: Exploring carbon offset projects to neutralise residual emissions.

Our carbon accounting journey is an ongoing process. By understanding our carbon footprint, we can make informed decisions to reduce our environmental impact. We are committed to transparency and accountability in our sustainability efforts, and we will continue to share our progress and learnings with our stakeholders.
